Concept becomes reality!?

Yesterday, Apple finally announced the iPad tablet that people have been speculating about for several years. I have created a number of concepts based on the rumors and conjecture, amongst them is this one I created for MacFormat magazine back in March/April 09.

I just struck me as very close to the new iPad with keyboard dock!!?
Maybe a gift wrapped, full spec iPad with a not from Steve Jobs and Jonathon Ives would be in order!? ;)

New Eden - latest personal work.

This image, or at least one like it has been in my mind for literally years now. Probably inspired by a couple of NASA’s space colony concepts of the 70’s, definitely by Ben Bova’s novel ‘Colony’, and obviously to an extent by Greg Bear’s ‘Eon and Clarke’s ‘Rama’ series!

Here is a link to a larger version

At any rate, after getting the newest version of Cinema 4D, with render instances, and speeded up sub poly displacent, I did a couple of tests with large amounts of trees, and then started to put this idea to the test.

Along came a spider!

My current project - 3DWorld asked me to create a tutorial on animating a spider for a future issue…

spider

I was given the option to simply find a suitable ready made asset to animate, but instead decided to dive in to ZBrush. The final 2 million poly model was exported at a lower poly count to Cinema 4D, where the high poly displacement map was added, and the texturing and animation were then completed! - I’m just wrapping up the tutorial now, and when the issue goes live, I’ll also add the animation to the site - it’s looking creepy! :D

Portrait of Lisa - Final

Finally, after a few weeks without time or inspiration, I have finished my first full digital painting on the Wacom Cintiq. I am very pleased with the final result, although I am having some indecision on the background colour - either cool grey as here, or the original warm orange tones!
Watch this space for more paintings soon :)

Apple NetBook concept

Recently commissioned by MacFormat magazine, this Apple NetBook concept is based on the belief that the innovative company is working on such a device, and assumed to be coming out this year.
The illustration has been doing the ‘blog’ rounds this last couple of weeks, and like other concepts I have developed, seems quite popular overall! :)

New source book page.

I have advertised in various source books for a few years now (American Showcase, PLAY), and have decided to give Directory Of Illustration a go this year. The book won’t be released until early next year in fact, but hopefully it will open up new client possibilities. This is my page!

Portrait of Lisa - WIP

Feeling the need to explore old skills, but using the digital tools I have become so familiar with, I have been trying out a Cintiq 21UX from Wacom. This device works like any other Wacom pen tablet, but with the enormous advantage of also being a screen that you can draw and paint directly onto within the likes of Photoshop and Painter etc…

… this thing really is stunning, and has had me so convinced that I am really painting again (after at least 10 years not doing it!), that I even tried to smudge the paint with my finger tip at one point, and blow away any dust (from pastel/pencil) on another! :D

This is a crop of a full body portrait I have been wanting to paint for a number of years - still a work in progress, but the face & hair are mostly done now.
